I want to wire HP-1A to a socket so I don't have the cable on the outside. If I leave the mini jack in the pickup wired to a socket will the batteries still drain? How long do the batteries last if it is left plugged in?

In order to permanently install HP-1A with internal jack properly you will need to use a stereo mini jack and stereo female 1/4” jack. This way when not in use the battery will not be drained.
